An Ebow is a battery operated electromagnetic string driver for steel stringed instruments, like lead, slide and pedal steel guitars.
Once activated by passing it over a vibrating steel string it keeps that string vibrating, until you pull the Ebow away.
The placement of the Ebow along the neck of the guitar controls the quality of the sound produced by the driven string.
By placing it about halfway between the fretted position and the bridge you will get a mellow, voice-like tone.
Used this way, with a touch of long digital delay and plenty of reverb, an Ebow produces a haunting pseudo vocal background.
Moved over a pickup the string will be overdriven, producing a growling sound, approximating the sound of cello being bowed hard.
